The Third Grade is considered a transitional grade. This year the children are learning many new things to prepare them for the middle and upper grades. One of the most difficult tasks is "reading to learn". In the first and second grades, they learned "how to read". Now they must use that skill to acquire the knowledge in different subject areas. This skill is not easy, but by the end of the year they will be well on their way to mastering this objective.

All of the third graders must learn their multiplication table, and it is very difficult for them to do this without your help. Flash cards seem to be the most effective. If they work with you for 5 to10 minutes each night, they will have them memorized in no time!
